Bugaboo Pocket is a game where you take care of a small digital insect and getting to know what they need to survive and thrive. Just don’t get too attached to them.
In this caretaking and narrative-driven adventure game, you are attempting to learn about your bug so you can take care of them. Thankfully, your various bugs (though you can only have one at a time) teach you about themselves, telling you what they like to eat, where they like to be pet, and what they need. Through trial and error, you can learn more of what the various stat bars on each pet mean, unlocking better ways to care for them.
Bugaboo Pocket does a great job of using mini-games with your bugs, providing you with an engaging way to play with your little pet. You can also decorate their house, read some of the details on how they felt about your actions, and earn resources. Your pet, though, doesn’t last long – they are bugs, after all. When your bug dies, you get to decide if you want to preserve them as a bug in a picture frame or if you want to burry them so that they help the Earth. The details of your previous bugs will last forever, showing you what bugs you have had in the past.
This game is well thought out and super polished. Unlocking features by learning your bug’s needs feels like you are getting better at taking care of these creatures, and with their short lives, you don’t grow too attached. There are also a bunch of achievements throughout the game that really captured my interest and made me want to play longer, too.
Bugaboo Pocket is currently in development, but in the meantime, you can add it to your Steam Wishlist.
