Frontline: War of Echoes sees you playing increasingly complex capture-the-flag against clones of your past runs.
This game starts off simply enough. You, playing as a member of one team, run to the other side of an empty playing field and go get the flag there. Then, you switch to the opposing team, but this time, you need to intercept a clone of everything you did in your past run and stop them from getting the flag while going to grab your own. Then you swap sides again and have to stop that previous clone from getting the flag. Do this as many times as you can before you finally fail.

I was not even slightly prepared for how hectic this seemingly-simple concept would get over time. It’s not long before a dozen or more clones are all rushing across the field, each growing more elaborate with movement and attacks as you continually try to outthink and outmaneuver your tactics from a few seconds before. Every time you have that eureka moment of finally figuring out what to do to stop your past self, you have to come up with an even more elaborate means of stopping that new tactic in the next round. Watching all of these play out at once every time is delightfully frantic, too, adding another layer of complexity to work through as you try to plan despite all the chaos around you.
Frontline: War of Echoes is yet another stellar concept from PUNKCAKE Délicieux. It pits you against yourself in a creative way, making you into your own opponent. With extra bonus weapons and destructible environments, you can really cause all kinds of trouble for yourself in a way that’s hard to stop playing.
Frontline: War of Echoes is available now on itch.io. It is also slated for release on Steam in the future.
