Trees Hate You takes you on a walk through a forest where every single pine means to see you dead in the most ridiculous ways possible.
You’ve just wrapped up a picnic and it’s time to head on home. Trouble is, suddenly every tree in the forest has some sort of problem with you and aim to make this journey as difficult and lethal as possible. These trees are devious, too. If you think you know a clear path forward, the trees will move to block it. If you think you can sneak around it, that’s when they pull out a gun and just shoot you outright. Once you’ve found a way around getting shot, they take you off-guard with another lethal attack.

The trees are always one step ahead of you in this game, and that’s honestly what I loved most about it. Yes, this style of game is built around anticipating player actions and then finding some way to kill them for it, but the creativity and cartoon-like goofiness of it all makes your deaths a constant delight. Something about a tree pulling a gun or stretching to block your path had me cracking up as I tried to find the one safe route through all of the danger. Also, the fact that it’s trees had me continually underestimating or missing certain dangers. Years of video games have taught me to dismiss trees as background objects, and this game continually used that against me.
Trees Hate You was a lot of fun purely to see all of the things the developer thought I would do and all of the ways they could use trees to stop me. There’s a ton of fun surprises in the available demo that have me excited to see what’s waiting for me in the full game. And also a little nervous about that big pine in my yard.
Trees Hate You is currently in development, but in the meantime, you can grab a demo from itch.io and add it to your Steam Wishlist.
