An Outcry sees you navigating a surreal night in your apartment complex after accidentally locking yourself out. At least there’s some talkative crows around.
CONTENT WARNING: Transphobia
The Unnamed lives on the fourth floor of an apartment complex, simply trying to exist despite the challenges of poverty, anxiety, and most of all, their casually-hateful neighbors. When they get locked out one night, they’ll have to endure the nasty, cutting comments that seem to spill out of these folks’ mouths endlessly, all while they try to find a way to just get back into their place. Not that the talking crows hanging around outside seem much better, as they kill folks AND say horrible things as well.
However, YOU also have to be careful while you’re out wandering the building at night as well. You’re going to have to make some careful decisions and choose your path very carefully throughout this menacing place if you’re going to make it through things all right. And outliving all of these awful neighbors is a pretty motivating reason to want to survive. Plus, it’s kinda really weird outside tonight and it would be nice to be able to come back indoors. Pretty cold as well. Hopefully there’ll be SOME nasty person here who’ll at least share their smokes.
An Outcry has some challenging elements to endure due to your hateful neighbors, but if it’s far too much to take, or you just don’t want to see some of this stuff, the game does have a neat system where it replaces slurs with the word “SLUR,” as well as other elements that could be overwhelming or triggering. While I can only speak to my own experience, the tools made it easier to cope with the game’s transphobic characters while still retaining the message. It’s an affecting, surreal experience.
An Outcry is available now on itch.io and Steam.
