Astebreed gives the feel of chaotic combat all around you by shifting from horizontal to vertical to 3D battles, always shifting the viewpoint to give the sense of being surrounded by danger.
Now available on the Nintendo Switch, Astebreed (which we previously enjoyed a great deal) follows Roy, a young pilot out to save what remains of humanity during a war against a mechanical race. He has a few tools to do this, from long range beams, a coating laser that locks a follow-up attack onto multiple targets, and a giant sword for up-close attacks. Because what’s a colossal robot without a huge sword?
Astebreed gives you an array of combat options, and it means you to put them to hard work through its continual perspective shifts. These serve to constantly keep you on-edge as foes come from all directions. You could be battling ships coming from the front when you suddenly find yourself in third person, dealing with blasts coming from all sides. These shifts create a sense of being attacked on all sides, with the view shifting to meet each new challenge, creating a sense of battling from deep within enemy lines.
Astebreed offers sharp shmup combat with a real sense of danger from its changes in viewpoints (and an Easy mode if you find this overwhelming at first).
Astebreed is available for $19.99 on the Nintendo Switch eShop, PlayStation Store, and Steam.
