Burn kingdoms. Pillage cities. Kill everyone in the country. These things happen in games and I don’t bat an eye. Kill a dog, though, like the evil wizard in Battle Princess Madelyn, though, and I’ll hunt you down.
An evil wizard has overtaken the kingdom and left your dog, Fritzy, as a ghost (who’s still got a helpful, loving spirit) in Ghouls N’ Ghosts-inspired Battle Princess Madelyn. To get brutal, brutal revenge (and save the people, I guess), you’ll need to cross ten levels (broken up into five stages each) of spooky forests, gloomy caves, and foreboding keeps filled with supernatural creeps and undead monstrosities.
Battle Princess Madelyn, having taken inspiration from Ghouls N’ Ghosts (in some very good ways) offers an array of throwing weapons you can hurl at creepy nasties in order to keep yourself fighting. These are themed to their areas, giving players many unique tools to use, as well as special secrets that can be found with them. You can also upgrade these weapons to lay more hurt on dog-unfriendly creatures depending on the armor you’re wearing, which also doubles as better defense than your PJs offer.
Battle Princess Madelyn offers some solid action (like the developer’s last excellent action game, Insanity’s Blade), but for those averse to the ruthless challenge of the games that inspired it, you’ll be happy to note that the game is much more lenient. It offers a special revival system that will put you back in the action without missing a beat should you kill a lot of enemies in a row. If you can keep up the kills, you’ll be able to stay in the fight a bit easier. Fritzy can also help out with some special powers, making things a bit easier.
If you always wished John Wick was slightly more adorable, grab Battle Princess Madelyn and get to work stomping that dog-hurting wizard.
Battle Princess Madelyn is available for $19.99 on Steam and the Microsoft Store. The Nintendo Switch eShop and PlayStation Store releases will be on December 13th. It is still slated to release on the Wii and PS Vita sometime in 2019.
