Yeah, bees can fly, but Beeny shows that it can be WAY more fun to hop your way up to higher places. If you don’t land on anything sharp, that is.
A Kiwi (from the developer’s upcoming platforming collect-a-thon Super Kiwi 64) is building a raft and sure could use some nice honey. Being a good bee pal, you head out to go get some even though it’s a long trek to get all the honey they need. It would probably be faster if you would just fly to the various bee’s nests to get some, but bouncing is so much more fun. And it never gets so challenging that our little bee would get frustrated at it either. It might get a bit spooky, but it’s rarely frustrating.
You’ve got a handful of stages that keep adding hazards and mechanics as you go. Ant conveyor belts will keep you moving as you try to hop upwards. Green bees will send you flying if you hop on them. Spiky snails and creatures will sending you flying away from them, but they don’t end your journey, thankfully. It just stings a bit. As you’re constantly climbing upwards, you might wonder what happens if you fall. Seeing as your own bee friends keep trying to help you climb these trees, it’s no wonder that a few more bee buddies are always floating below to keep you from falling too far. It keeps the game light and fun – perfect when it’s just a pleasure to see your bee bouncing around.
Beeny is a light, playful platformer (except when it sometimes gets a little bit spooky), and it contains some more challenging time trials if you want to spend some time getting really good at its stages. It’s a bouncy, charming title that is a great deal of fun for an hour or so.
Beeny is available now on the Nintendo eShop, itch.io, and Steam.
