Before The Night sees you living in a town where humans are the pets and animals are the owners. And things get a little terrifying when night falls.
Lisa wants to revive her lost master, and her work to do that has lead her to a village of adorable bunny folks. They love keeping humans as pets, too, and happily take her in. Just need to wear this heavy old collar and you’ll be a welcome, pampered pet of these rabbit people. They’re perfectly charming bunnies in the daytime as well. Super willing to help you out in whatever you need. Especially if you have some carrots for them. You can get all kinds of tools and help if you’ve got the carrots to pay for it. Just…maybe don’t bother them when night falls.
Things get disturbing in this little town whenever night falls. The rabbits shapeshift into something far more bloodthirsty and menacing, and they’ll chase after you if they catch sight of you. You’ll have to sneak through bushes and stay out of sight if you want to live long. However, you need a certain item, like Flowers of Life, from this village to bring back your master. Taking a flower causes night to fall instantly, though, creating a situation where there’s no choice but to hurl yourself into danger. Although you CAN kill some of these bunnies with a hammer if you can do it unseen. Can you bring yourself to do it, though? Even knowing what these creatures will become once the sun goes down?
Before The Night is a chilling, frantic flight from formerly-cute creatures. You can make it easier by killing these folks before they transform, but something about smashing bunny heads with a hammer makes this game feel even more unsettling than what happens at nightfall. Maybe my poor master will just have to stay dead.
Before The Night is available now on Steam.
