You don’t collect the monsters in Beyond the Phone Screen. They collect you. I feel like it’s a bit too dangerous to be playing an ARG on the streets in this town.
Civilian GO! is an augmented reality game that’s meant to help you get to know your town better. With it, you’ll take part in events and activities that will make you feel more at-home in this place. Doesn’t it feel more like you belong when you do the local activities and hit the hot spots? Well, maybe in other towns, it would, but there’s something very wrong in this city. Walking around taking pictures, hitting up certain spots, and seeing specific sites might be a great activity elsewhere, but there’s lethal monsters wandering this place.
Now, it might not seem worth it to you to go looking for local sights and sounds when a headless torso might flay the skin off you, but what else were you really going to do today? At least you’ll be getting some good exercise as you flee for your life from the four creatures that make this town home. You want it to be more challenging than just walking to places and hitting a button, right? Putting your actual life on the line to play the game will definitely ensure that things are constantly exciting. There’s four special endings depending on how your attempts to survive go.
Beyond the Phone Screen is a great horror take on ARG games, adding an element of fear and danger to walking around and collecting things/sites in an alternate vision of your own world. Goodness knows the people of this city probably need an escape from this reality.
