Ever feel a little bit lonely in a new city full of people who just don’t seem to be your friends yet? Birth has you dealing with that loneliness in a…morbid way.
You are going to create your own friend using organs and bones you find so you will never be lonely again. Unlike in real life, this isn’t as creepy as it may sound. In this game it seems almost normal to break into people’s homes, steal random items, and build whatever you’d like to build. The world is spooky, creepy, but still cute and fun to explore. It’s a nice balance to see in a hand-drawn world that looks captivating and intriguing. You can explore the city, help find missing fish from your neighbors tank and place them back in, piece together bones in a spinal cord, and solve physics-based puzzles to continue your quest.
The world is full of secrets, as well as places that you might have in your own town like art galleries, museums, and bakeries. Inside of these areas are scenes that you can interact with and puzzles waiting to be solved. There isn’t any real direction apart from building your creature, (friend). So, when you are given puzzles, you must figure it out yourself – something that isn’t too challenging to do but still feels very good once accomplished. There seems to be a good variety of these different puzzles, so if one is too challenging, you can always come back to it later. You’re not constrained by having to complete that task to move on.
During my time with Birth at WASD, I found myself wanting to build this creature, wishing for more time to slowly explore this world, and wondering if the stranger in the house next door, laying under their blanket in bed, would in fact be my friend after I randomly collected items in their home.
Birth is currently in development, but in the meantime, you can add it to your Steam Wishlist.
