Broken Race is a roguelike racing game where you watch the world glitch, change, and distort as your sanity falls apart.
Often racing games have you racing against other people, trying to be the fastest possible. In this game, you are also battling against your crumbling mind. The changes to the racing track are actually meant to be projections of your own mental deterioration, which continues to get worse as your sanity gets lower.

The world does start to get chaotic quite quickly thanks to these effects. You will find yourself on tracks that you can fall off of, random other cars will appear right next to you, suddenly there is fire and obstacles and things that just don’t make sense. You never really know what to expect in the moment-to-moment action of the race.
The tracks themselves are randomized, with a bunch of different levels throughout. Your goal is to just get to the end, like any other racing game, but everything feels so different. Even making decisions, by following some massive tracks with looming signs, feels quite interesting and unique. Thankfully you can find a bunch of upgrades during each race that can give you energy and change the world around you, along with upgrading your car or abilities.
I got the chance to play a bit of Broken Race at BIG Conf, where I found the sort of chaotic, choice-driven racing game something new, quirky, and captivating. It feels like so much more than a racing game, instead turning into a game of decisions and trying to figure out what is real and what is just within your mind. The enemies popping out from nowhere took me by surprise and I wanted to figure out how this twisting road ended and where the finish line was.
Broken Race is currently in development, but in the meantime, you can add it to your Steam Wishlist.
