cdROM.480p.hd_freeDownload sees you looking into people’s lives and then using that information to create a scummy email to get money out of your victim.
It’s the 90’s and you’ve got an empty pantry. A sick grandmother with medical bills. And a computer with access to email. What better way to make some money than by scamming people on the early internet? To do this, you’ll need to look into people’s profiles, reading up on their lives, and then use that information to choose the perfect way to target them. You have a handful of email templates to play with and a lot of words you can tweak in order to write something that will convince them that you’re real and somebody they should wire some money to.
There are nine possible targets, each with their own quirks and personalities, so it will take a bit of playing around to find out what makes these people tick. They all have some sort of weakness that you can pry into, which is a distressing way to find yourself thinking. Reading up on people’s personal lives and asking yourself “How can I use this to trick them?” can be a gut-churning way to act. However, it can also give you some indication on how people would look at your own social media and target you for something shady.
cdROM.480p.hd_freeDownload kept me thinking on far more than my in-game victims, though. It’s also a look into what happens to some of the people who find themselves doing these kinds of shady acts. Poverty strikes at so many people, and when you find yourself starving while your family members die, what will you do? When death is the alternative, would you rip off some people to stay alive? Does that inform who you target when you play this game? It’s a thoughtful piece with an intriguing aesthetic.
