Dinopunk: the Cacops Adventure is a side-scrolling arcade platformer with a lot of nostalgia in its (mesozoic) roots.
You get to play a little dinosaur, who can use the power of water to defeat enemies and work your way through levels, all to get back a stolen egg from an evil ninja! Everything is bright, pixelated and vibrant in this game! Your little creature is absolutely adorable, exploring the lands and taking on a variety of enemies to get back the egg. I played through some of the beach levels, where the seaside creatures weren’t challenging and everything did feel like a lot of fun. One of the bosses, a giant dinosaur with a pair of headphones, is what really started bringing in the actual challenge of the game.

Avoiding bosses attacks, watching out for fallen items, and shooting out tons of water is key to staying alive and beating your enemies. Dinopunk: the Cacops Adventure doesn’t just have boss fights and standard platforming levels, either, as there are some optional levels around the map like surfing, which has you moving slightly differently to do tricks and staying ahead of a giant wave! These breaks from the main gameplay add a lot of variety to the game.
Thie retro-inspired adventure feels sleek, fun, and like a great take on classic games. There is clearly a lot of love for 80s and 90s games that have been put into this one! I only got to play a demo at BCN Game Fest, but I was interested in seeing more of the levels and optional mini-games that the game itself had to offer. It feels familiar, while also feeling unique, with very fun characters and a lot of challenge in the boss fights!
Dinopunk: the Cacops Adventure is available now on Steam.
