Things get a little unsettling on the open sea when the sun goes down in DREDGE. Not that the twisted, creepy fish you catch during the day are very comforting.
You’re plying your fishing trade in a small clutch of islands. Folks need to eat, here, and you can bring that food to them. However, the people here seem a bit…odd. Preoccupied with some eerie pastimes and activities that make them seem a bit off. Their money is still good, though, and you can use those funds to keep upgrading that rickety boat of yours. However, if the people seem a bit disturbed to you, you’ll soon understand why the more time you spend out on the waters. There’s definitely some frightening things lurking in the water, many of which you’ll start to pull up with your catches.
As you fish around the islands, you’ll have to organize your finds in your cargo hold. This reminds me a bit of Resident Evil 4‘s inventory system, and is just as much fun to play around with. It’s just as limiting, too, so you’ll need to wrangle your catches until they all fit so you can make the most out of your trip. That desire to maximize the use of space in your hold can get you into trouble, though, because unsettling things start to come out once it gets dark. These things can do some damage to your hold and your fish cargo, so you really don’t want to be out at night. Unless you let your curiosity about these mutant fish get the better of you, I guess.
DREDGE is an intriguing fishing game that had me enjoying sorting my catch as much as actually getting it on the hook. At the same time, the ever-increasing horror makes every trip on the boat a little more frightening while also drawing me in as I wanted to understand what was happening. But curiosity never does you any good when these horrors start to manifest, does it?
DREDGE is available now on the Nintendo eShop, PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, GOG, and Steam.
