Fires At Midnight follows a couple struggling to stay together in a world where being intimate without love causes you to self-combust.
Yun is a photographer who’s having a hard time balancing his career as a photographer and his relationship with his girlfriend, Chitra. Given that getting close to one another might make them burst into flames in this rocky state (and because, you know, it’s good to rekindle a dying relationship, too), you’ll be working to help them repair the rift between them. To do this, you’ll be poring over their personal possessions, using these to trigger memories that will reveal the couple’s time together and their growing troubles.
Each character (and you’ll see the game from both of their perspectives before it’s done) sees the world in a different way, adding layers of narrative on top of each scene. This “Second Layer” hints at how each character views the world, their possessions, and their partner, and will be key to fully understanding how these two see one another. There are also a handful of puzzles and mini-games that you can play to gain further insight into the couple’s past, so expect to do some digging across multiple play styles in your journey to help these two get along better.
Fires At Midnight has three different endings depending on how well you patch things up between the two with your crafty rummaging. Hopefully you can keep one or both of them from becoming a pillar of fire before the new year gets rung in.
Fires At Midnight is available now on itch.io and Steam.
