There’s a simple purity in only being able to bat something back up in the air with a button – in this case, any input But, Hae makes for a compelling reason to keep doing it.
When I first opened Nuka’s latest project, Hae, I didn’t understand the simplicity of the whole thing. I rocked between the Z & X key expecting each one to do different things. I was wrong. Each input simply flicks the little ball which you control back into the air. Doesn’t sound too complicated, right?
Well, there’s a giant – I feel like venus fly-trap – plant raring to burst out from the surface below and snap you up with minimal warning. As a matter of fact, there’s no rhyme or reason as to when the plant will snap up beyond ‘where you were a second ago,’ and that’s a dang good reason to keep your tumbling dot on the move. So you should get your inputs down quickly.
Hae is, as you’ve no doubt gathered, an extremely simple game at heart, but no less compelling for it. Its music is great, the reload times are ace, things never intensify – so each mistake feels your own – and it’s a tight and tidy project with quick load times. In fact, if this had an online leaderboard, then this is exactly the thing I’d have been passing around friends on the internet a decade-or-so back.
Hae is playable now on itch.io.
