Haunted Dungeons : Hyakki Castle is a real treat for those interested in Yokai and monsters from Japanese literature and folklore.
A sorceror who was believed to be working to overthrow the shogun has been exiled to an island. That doesn’t seem to have done much to keep the sorceror from continuing his schemes, taking over the island and the castle on it. Four agents (whom you can customize as you see fit) have been dispatched to handle the issue, and will have to battle puzzles and monsters to defeat the dangerous spellcaster.
A large array of monsters drawn from Japanese myth fill the castle halls, though, making it difficult to reach the sorceror. You’ll have to deal with dozens of sickening monsters, attacking with all four of your party members while staying on the move to avoid damage, in order to complete your mission. That said, expect a bit of a lesson on Japanese monsters as you do so, running into all manner of varied creatures throughout your journey. It’s a real treat just to see the kinds of creatures that have been included in the game, although don’t enjoy them so much that you sit there flat-footed.
Haunted Dungeons: Hyakki Castle is a challenging dungeon crawler with some twisting layouts, complex puzzles, and fast, but difficult battles. For monster fanatics, though, it’s also an excellent excuse to get up close to some really great creatures.
