How Fish Is Made sees your fishy self dumped into a strange, disturbing machine alongside some other scaly folks. But what will you do in this cruel place?
You’ve got a choice: up or down. And, if you’re like me, you’re probably not really sure which is the better direction. Several other fish down here have their own ideas about which way is best, and seem obsessed with their choice of direction with an eerie fervor. Something about this place, which can so cruelly end a fish’s life, seems to have brought out an obsession with where to go. As a fish wriggling your way through rusted chutes and corridors that look eerily alive, I suppose it makes sense that you’d cling to hope wherever you could find it. Even if it’s just a choice in which direction to take next.
It’s not all doom and gloom down here, though. Even if you DID accidentally kill someone just so you could keep walking forward, you might make contact with an insect with a musical number prepared. A little song and dance really brings the spirit up, honestly. And I guess finding a sense of positivity in some bizarre entertainment beats worshipping a direction. Not that the song got me any closer to escaping. Not that I’m sure flopping in a direction got me any closer to leaving, either. So, since both seem equally hopeless, I’ll take the bug’s music any day.
Not that you can just sit and enjoy the music forever in How Fish Is Made. Eventually, you have to make that choice that’s been hanging over your head, and you will have to walk away with the consequence of choosing something, even if you don’t really understand. Unless you just sit here and turn the power off. That’s a choice too, isn’t it? In the end, the game is an unsettling experience that whispers promises of cruelties just out of sight, creating an incredible atmosphere. Even WITH a musical number in the middle of it.
