You’ve been sent to the snowy glaciers with a simple job: use your drill and power fist to stop the yeti dead in its tracks.
Hunt The Yeti is a single-screen arcade-style game about careful timing and terrain deformation.
Four members of the Sparklin Labs team came together to create a wonderful little arcade game back in 2014. Hunt The Yeti was a dual purpose creation, both an entry for Ludum Dare 31, and also an example of the team’s HTML5 game making software: Superpowers.
Hunt The Yeti is an extremely simple idea made real. Each attempt begins with you landing your ship in a generated arena. You then strafe using WASD, use your ice drill with your left mouse button, and punch with the right mouse button. The punch doesn’t actually do damage, but instead stuns enemies, knocks them from the air, or belts them backward. It’s through a combination of these two actions that you carefully trap the enemies which are trying to track you down across the ice.
Once enemies are stuck in the water, they rapidly turn to blocks of ice before exploding into gems (not sure about the realism behind that element of it) which you then use between rounds to purchase a selection of upgrades. The loop of turns is quite tight, and if you start missing gems then you’ll very quickly fall behind in the waves. Things like drill speed improvements are essential, and the ability to knock enemies back further cannot be underestimated.
You can, of course, fail in your quest to hunt the yeti. If you get clipped by enemies too many times then you’ll succumb to the injuries. Alternately, you can slip into the holes you have created and freeze to death. Cheerful stuff, given the game’s visual style.
Hunt The Yeti is available now on Itch.io.
