Hymble Ventures is a game all about exploring a colorful world as an alien on the autistic spectrum, navigating this place and your own emotions on the way.
Some games take you to fantasy land, while others try to find hyper realistic places for you to explore. Hymble Ventures, however, is somewhere in between. Playing as an alien on the autistic spectrum, you are trying to understand the world around you. Playing as this character, you are able to explore a mysterious forest, looking around for clues and ways to move forward. There are a lot of puzzles that can be solved through finding and understanding the pieces and directions the game takes, but at the same time, your character can find themselves overwhelmed with the sound and texture of the world that they are trying to live in, sometimes having negative effects on them.
Throughout the game, there is a voice in your head that speaks with clarity to let you know things are going to be okay if they feel like they are not. Often this voice can help you when you are struggling, and it is quite comforting, too. Some of the puzzles themselves are a bit hard to find, but once you have located them you can find yourself easily understanding what must be done and taking them on to complete them.
I got the chance to check out a demo of Hymble Ventures at EGX, where the developer of the game was actually dressed up as the main character, adding to the presentation. This game is based on their life and feelings, showcasing how they deal with the world as a person with autism. Having these sorts of games are very important, as it showcases an important perspective in an easy-to-understand and digest type of media. It puts you in the place of the character, which helps with understanding.
