Tactical RPG Wildermyth sends us out into the countryside to stop an encroaching evil, but all we end up doing is losing a lot of limbs in this IGP First Look.
Nasty forces seem to be polluting the animals and creatures of the world, and you’re about ready to deal with it. To do so, you gather a ragtag gang together, each dreaming of heroic ballads and stories being made about them. Perhaps they should focus more on the dangers that are coming instead, as Wildermyth doesn’t allow for easy heroism.
Battle takes place on a grid, adding elements of exploration as you work through keeps and towers while seeking out foes. Furniture and other debris can be used for cover (or weaponized with one of the game’s EXTREMELY neat classes), and you’ll want to do this to stay safe. Neither enemies or heroes have much health, and both sides deal lots of damage, making fights go by quickly. This makes it easy to do fast matches, but also that things can go badly really fast. Since characters can die permanently (or lose limbs that affect how they play for the rest of the game), this makes for some ruthless turnarounds.
While combat is one aspect, you also have to deal with how evil is infesting the land. Enemies will grow stronger and attack once-safe areas as in-game time passes, forcing you to hurry your plans along. You can build defenses to slow the enemy down, but they also grow stronger as time passes, gaining new abilities and tactics. This gives the game a sense of urgency, one that makes the stakes feel that much higher.
Wildermyth already seems like a challenging, compelling strategy RPG in its Early Access state, and while some aspects of the game could use some better explanation, it’s still a solid purchase.
Wildermyth is available now on Steam Early Access.
