Define the possible, impossible, possibly possible, and more in Impossibilia, an entry in this year’s Philosophy Game Jam.
Tallshrimp’s Impossibilia is an experiment in explaining relative possibility through the video game medium. In it, you make connections from realities to achieve a series of objectives, each based around the exclusion or inclusion of surfaces and items from the perspective of a single reality.
While this is a little bit confusing at first, it is a fantastic concept for a puzzle game. The complexities are quickly ironed out, and soon, you’ll be making realities aware only of themselves, or aware of other realities by connecting, arrow lines. It’s all explained through relative objectives; this green grass reality has a rock, while this green grass reality has a tree in its place, therefore the rock, instead being a tree, is a possibility.
Perhaps most interesting is when the potentials double upon themselves, and you’re tasked with ensuring that some options are possibly possible, while some of the components they have are to be excluded as potential.
It’s all incredibly smart stuff, and made in a very cute, approachable art style. While I’d have liked if the selected realities were made more clear than simply having a shadow added, it’s an impressive accomplishment for something pieced together so quickly for a game jam.
Impossibilia is available to play on browser on Itch.io.
