Iron Meat doesn’t waste much time before you find yourself shooting horrifically mutated people, sickening mouths, and living barrels.
Some sort of sinister, fleshy power has broken into our world and is infecting anything in its path, turning anything it touches alive and hostile in this Contra-inspired run and gun. Those dang scientists and their experiements gone wild! With its arrival, this meat power has created some wonderfully gross monsters for players to fight against.
Yes, there’s the usual array of soldiers and gun placements to deal with, they are all infested with goopy, flesh-like growths to make everything feel icky. And nothing is off-limits as a disgusting new enemy. As much as the action is solid, I swear I keep playing this game to see what sort of weird object will come alive in some interesting way next. Massive trucks turn into spider-like beasts that rip up the ground as they rush you down. An entire train comes rushing at you, the front car turned into a tooth-filled maw with what looks like brain matter bursting from the top. If I’m going to spend some time shooting wild creatures, it’s nice to have some great variety and creativity in the designs.
Iron Meat is also just really solid to play. The weapons are a mixture of tools that will feel familiar to Contra fans (as well as how you can power them up by picking up the same weapon power-up twice) as well as some other fun surprises. You can play it with a friend and work together to stop the torrent of torn flesh. You can even play through as a dog if you like. It’s just a super solid action game filled with all kinds of stomach-churning visual surprises.
Iron Meat will be made available today on the Nintendo eShop, PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, itch.io, the Epic Games Store, GOG, VK Play, and Steam. A physical release of the game is available from Strictly Limited Games.
