For those of you who felt Just Shapes & Beats was going too easy on you, there’s newly-challenging Hardcore tracks that have been made available alongside the game’s PS4 release.
Put simply, the game plays as if your sound visualizer is trying to kill you. You need to dodge around waves of sound that have been created by the game’s pulsing, high-speed tracks, weaving in between the songs-given-form. Each song tells its own story of pain and beautiful tunes, though, carrying you through a narrative of agony as you struggle to find any place to keep yourself safe.
This was never easy for me at any point. Even bringing in a bunch of other players (online or local) for multiplayer didn’t really help my tone-deaf dodging. As usual, there are many skilled players out there who are far, far better than me. And they wanted something harder, which developer Berzerk Studio obliged them on with the game’s new Hardcore versions. These are meant to bring players to their knees, and are a special addition to the PS4 version (although they’ll be coming to other platforms as a free update in the future).
Of course, the game’s easier modes are all still in place as well. Try a casual run if your internal rhythm is as good as mine. Embrace the sweet beats and visuals using the game’s party mode, which lets it play in the background with its neat effects. If you love EDM/Chiptunes, you really can’t lose with Just Shapes & Beats.
Well, you can lose CONSTANTLY in the Hardcore versions. Whatever tickles you.
Just Shapes & Beats is available now on PS4, the Nintendo Switch, and Steam.
