In Kamaeru: A Frog Refuge, you will be creating a sanctuary for frogs, becoming friends with the cute amphibeans while developing various natural lands.
This game is full of colorful frogs who often play on everyday household things. As for the gameplay, you are developing several bits of land to create space for frogs to relax and enjoy themselves. This is done through purchasing different areas within the sanctuary and adding furniture there – this will then attract different frogs. This is all to help your brother after leaving your office job for something more meaningful and that would help the world.
If a frog decides to come to your sanctuary (and they do so often) you can take their picture and feed them some bugs. If you feed them enough of the bugs that they like, they become your friend and you learn a lot about them. Frogs that you really know well can actually be used in the breeding program to create different patterns and types of frogs. This then increases your reputation within the community, which is quite interesting.
There was a second area to the Kamaeru: A Frog Refuge demo I played at Gamescom – a wetland which is used to get more bugs to feed to frogs. This area, at first, is empty and doesn’t have much going on. You can start by placing down plants and ponds to attract bugs to collect, as well as fruits from the plants themselves. Placement is really important in this area of your world, as plants do need to be close to ponds so that they have water.
Eventually, frogs can be attracted to this part of the swamp as well, Even if you grow things that frogs won’t eat, you can use them to craft things like jam and lollies to then sell for more funds for your refuge.
Frogs spawn quite quickly in this game, so you won’t be waiting around for ages hoping a new frog comes. It feels like, between the various areas and activities, there is plenty to do to keep you interested. I found myself quite enjoying my time in this relaxing frog collecting game!
Kamaeru: A Frog Refuge is available now on the Nintendo eShop, Microsoft Store, and Steam.
