Ancient evil is up to hijinks again, opening up the gates to Tartarus and all of the less-than-savory types within, so the world of Knights of Tartarus could use some heroic-types.
Naturally, defeating old evil requires your help. The townsfolk could handle new evil all on their own. Still, Ralph threw out his back telling adventurers how nice the mountains were. Sally lost her voice while telling everyone what town they were visiting a few hundred times. So, turn-based combat against powerful baddies is going to have to fall to you. But all the NPCs are very grateful, I’ll tell ya.
Knights of Tartarus casts you out into the world to do away with evil, although it’s up to you how you want to do that. The game features a handful of customization options for your character, letting you level them in various ways to better deal with the monsters that will randomly pop up in your path (or talk your ear off before clobbering you). You can also further adjust weapons and spells to really make your warrior work how you want them to.
Once you know how you want to fight, you’ll need to steadily work your way across the countryside facing goblins, hostile insects, and other irate animals in Dragon Quest-inspired first-person combat. Expect a similar level of challenge to the past title as well, as dying will bring you back to your last save. Don’t expect to keep anything after death.
Knights of Tartarus aims to please fans of older RPGs, offering a glimpse into the look and challenges of the era. Ancient evil won’t vanquish itself, will it? Don’t ask Ralph. You know how his back gets.
Knights of Tartarus is available for $9.99 on Steam Early Access.
