Fight through a dangerous labyrinth as you attempt to build a hand good enough to best your card-game opponent in Modern Misteri Mirror.
Modern Misteri Mirror, from Frescogusto, is a pleasant combination of shooter and card game which all plays out within a world restricted to five colours. You must navigate your way around an enclosed maze, outmaneuvering strange creatures and defeating them in order to collect playing cards.
Once you have enough cards, you can play against a sitting, smiling fellow at an untitled card game. The game within a game follows the rules of rock-paper-scissors, although with numerical values assigned to each of the cards. If your card is strong against your opponent’s, then your card’s value will count for double.
I’m a sucker for games within games, although I’ve got to admit that the main reason I booted up Modern Misteri Mirror was because it has those fantastic, two-dimensional hands on the screen at almost all times. That said, it features an inventory system, and a clever system for picking cards while playing the game… it’s definitely more than just those hands.
While this game can be completed within a few minutes once you have got the hang of the shooting in the game, it is a great little snippet of what could be a greater project if the developer wishes. As it stands, however, it is a solid entry to the 19th Mini Jam.
Modern Misteri Mirror is available to play for free via browser or as a Windows or Mac download over on Itch.io.
