Drawing from slow-boil atmospheric horror, Okaeri will make you feel like you’re never safe…even in your own home.
You will assume the role of a middle school-aged Japanese girl, eager to return home and see her mother for dinner. Unfortunately, Mom is nowhere to be found and there is an unnerving air in the new house they had just moved into. Perhaps there is more to this seemingly-normal house than meets the eye. Your job is to search the house, if you dare, and find clues to understand what exactly happened while you were at school. It’s up to you to piece together the mystery, or you may the one left in pieces.
Okaeri can get under your skin, even if it seems like very little is happening. You won’t be startled every moment and given whiplash from jump scares, but you will feel an overwhelming terror as you pursue the truth. The game also features a VHS visual style that runs about as well as your standard VCR, complete with noise and interlacing. Nice and terrifying.
Okaeri will have you scared to take even a second glance around the room, so if you’re looking to get some pre-Halloween jitters, this is your game.
Okaeri is available now on itch.io and Steam.
