OlliOlli World opens up a large, vibrant world of wild cartoon places to skateboard in, letting you do tricks with ease across silly, surreal, imaginative landscapes.
Want to find the skateboarding gods? It’s going to involve a long journey across an array of pretty places and wacky tracks. Being a world completely built around skateboarding, though, there’s tracks, rails, and walls to grind everywhere as you move through bustling streets, odd forests, and other locales full of unique characters cheering you on. I couldn’t help but feel that I wanted to slow down and catch some of the creatures and activities that were in the backgrounds, as the game excels at making you feel like you’re rushing through a lively land inhabited by interesting beings. It gives a strong Adventure Time vibe with its style, and offers a similar quirkiness in the places and people who live there.
The game aims to make skateboarding feel smooth and accessible as you hurtle across the landscapes, though. The controls feel very intuitive as you swap between grinding, skating, and slipping along walls. It comes quite naturally as you flow along (like how The Ramp felt very natural), but that doesn’t mean there’s no challenge to come from these tracks. There’s a variety of difficulty modes available, and you can also respawn not too far from where you blundered into a wall if you like. The game is willing to go easy on beginners who are getting the feel of the game down, but there’s lots of complex movements required if you want that perfect run. It’s up to you, and with how smooth it feels to switch from grinding to skating to sliding on walls, it feels good to practice. Plus, you can’t beat the sights along the way.
OlliOlli World is a complex, yet approachable adventure in skateboarding across a charming world. It’s fun to simply lose yourself in the delight of moving through these places.
OlliOlli World will be made available today on the Nintendo eShop, PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, and Steam.
