You need to stay light on your feet as you slam down your card attacks, as the combat isn’t waiting for you in the slightest in One Step From Eden.
Some card games give you some time to plan your moves out, but this title will have you scrambling during its live action combat. Enemies will be continually laying down their own area blasts and attacks, so you need to keep an eye on the grid to know where things are about to go south, moving out of harm’s way as you try to lay down your own card-based abilities. This results in a tense, compelling dance between you and your foe as you both rush to play your weapons while moving out of the way of damaging beams and strikes.
The game gives you nine different playable characters to choose from, each giving you a unique battle style. This gives you a lot of options on how to play, as does the game’s decision-making system. Sure, someone might have been launching damaging beams at you and trying to kill you, but that doesn’t mean you have to be mean to them once you’ve defeated them. Maybe a little kindness goes a long way with the denizens of this world. You’ll just have to see.
You’ll want to be sure your local co-op buddy is on the same page if you decide to be merciful, as you might run into a real-world disagreement over the fate of your enemy. Just don’t argue for long, as having both of you in a fight should make your time with One Step From Eden a little easier. Assuming you don’t stumble into one another and both get hit by some of the game’s lethal attacks. This is a roguelike, after all.
One Step From Eden is available now on the Nintendo Switch, itch.io, and Steam.
