Paper Knight is a stunning 2.5D platformer where you play as an arts-and-crafts knight in a world made out of colored paper and cardboard.
I got the chance to play Paper Knight at BCN Game Fest and found that there was something really captivating about the game’s visuals. Everything looked like it was hand made out of recycled material. Also, it looked like you were on a stage. The hearts, score, and even clouds were hanging from the sky using little strings. Your character had a massive cardboard stick attached to them that lifts them up so that they could jump. The boss at the end of the first world was a giant shoebox puppet dragon which just looked fantastic.

The actual theming around the stage and puppet-like features was really fantastic and the biggest stand out from the game itself. Apart from the paper arts and crafts aesthetic of the game itself, the movement in the game felt natural and smooth. It’s got over ten different platforming levels with the one boss at the end, so it’s a short experience but one that was clearly lovingly made. That care also extends to a storyline that draws upon the myths of Catalan folklore, reflecting the developers themselves and their heritage.
I do hope when the game is fully out, there are some more unique features, as it does feel like a generic platformer at the moment. There are a handful of upgrades and secrets that can be discovered in the game, but the real draw is the visual style of the game itself. That said, If you are a fan of platformers similar to Mario and the like, as well as bite-sized platformers, you’ll enjoy playing this game.
Paper Knight is currently in development, but in the meantime, you can add it to your Steam Wishlist.
