If you love getting lost for ages tending your crops and fawning over your livestock, Peepaw’s Farm is absolutely the opposite of what you’re looking for.
I am big into farming games, so when I saw Peepaw’s Farm on Xbox, I figured why not give it a go. This game had no trailer, a handful of screenshots, and a description about a grumpy old grandpa who wanted to work on his farm. I assumed it would be some sort of farming simulator that would allow me to create and grow a massive farm. Take care of crops and animals. You know, the normal affair when it comes to farming games. However, I was quite wrong.
The game can be played completely in under five minutes, as it’s actually really simple. You are a grandfather who is running a modest farm with your granddaughter. However, your granddaughter isn’t that into actually helping out around the farm and rarely looks up from her phone. She doesn’t hear you as you mutter about her, complain about the farm, or otherwise be super grumpy. And, that’s fine, as you prepare your truck to take your produce to market. This is the majority of the game – finding the right veggies and bringing them to your truck, so that you can go to the market and show off your produce. The game quickly becomes quite silly when your eggplant needs help growing and you continue to have a hard time relating to your daughter.
I was surprised when the entire game ended as I put the last item into the truck. I thought that the game would be longer, but it wasn’t, instead displaying a screen of achievements which showed me that I missed only a handful of them. Some are more challenging then others – one requiring a specific vegetable to be put into the truck one veggie at a time and another about seeing how fast you can complete the entire game. Peepaw’s Farm feels to me like one of those old school, silly, browser-based free-to-play games with funny narration – although I do find myself wishing there was more to the game. It’s a quick and interesting experience!
