Pickin’ Panki‘s prehistoric world is swarming with rambunctious rascals and succulent snacks, all delivered with a sweet, colorful NES palette.
Harkenman and Teodor Dumitrache‘s Pickin’ Panki is an NES inspired adventure game with a clever levelling system and a fun world to explore. Players take on the role of a hungry humanoid who must scavenge, smash, and scramble around the game’s world, climbing trees, smashing through cave walls, and generally rooting around for things to snack on.
That’s right, in Pickin’ Panki, you grow stronger, and subsequently better in brawls, by finding enormous items of food which have been hidden around the world, and then consuming them. Just because food makes you tougher doesn’t mean you can clobber whatever you want after a big meal, though. You don’t know how strong your prehistoric enemies are until you’ve engaged with them, so sometimes it is better to break for the horizon rather than go down fighting.
While the current demo is missing quite a lot of content, there are already two islands to explore with many more to follow. From this demo, it looks like Pickin’ Panki is definitely one to watch (and there’s already the start of an elaborate manual included with the demo). It covers several power-ups and effectors which are hidden around the game world. It seems like a whole lot of preparation has gone into the current state of the demo – something which I hope will allow the team to push forward with production.
