In Power Level, an irate box boss is rushing to meet you in a few minutes. Is that enough time to grow your strength throughout a generated dungeon?
I have no idea what this giant pile of box is so mad about, but they’re coming and they are going to give you one heck of a beating when they get here. As a lowly action RPG warrior, you have five minutes to get into good shape for the encounter. So, that means clobbering enemies as fast as you can to gain EXP and levels, poking through dungeon halls in search of valuables and power-ups, and doing anything you can to be strong enough to survive the fight that’s to come.
This is the sort of thing that usually has me scrambling for some online walkthrough on what I should do, but this game is randomly generated. You can’t count on any particular power-up or item to help you win the day. You just have to make the most of your moves and the monsters that get thrown in your way. It might not be the ideal setup, but sometimes being a video game hero means doing your best despite a terrible situation.
Naturally, the game is quite short, but given that it’s about grinding, making it a quick playthrough turns the dull task of grinding into an intense rush to gain power. It’s an appealing scramble where you have to strive for the best use of your time possible. Power Level makes for an involved five minutes as you play it, and all with an exciting finish against a boss that’s not messing around. I will never again underestimate the rage that can be contained in a bunch of heavy boxes, that’s for sure.
Power Level is available now (for whatever you wish to pay for it) on itch.io.
