Procemon: You Must Catch Them is a monster-catching game where everything is generated, tasking you with overcoming evil despite endless chaos.
You’re out to beat up the shareholders of the sinister Infinity Corporation, and you need some creatures to help you do it. What creatures will you get as you explore, though? As mentioned, everything is procedurally generated in the game, so you never know what you’ll run into. You can’t even guess the names of the monsters, as those are generated as well. As are their attacks. And their animations, the sounds they make, and their special effects are generated as well. You need to actually get to know your monsters to figure out how to use them, as there’s no way to tell what you have on your hands.
That procedural generation extends into other areas. Each monster has a description, but those are generated as well (and usually hilarious or bizarre because of it). If you want more monsters, you can try to charm them onto your team. May as well, seeing as it’s hard to know what’s good or not. You can also fuse them together to make something new, drawing on that power of randomness and chaos to see if you get some interesting new creature.
It’s so chaotic and unpredictable that it’s fun to just collect whoever you can and roll with what the game gives you. This is what’s made the game so intriguing, to me. When I never have any idea of what I’m fighting or what creature I’m befriending, I’m not worry about stats or fighting capabilities. I’m just getting to meet these unknowable creatures and take them on strange adventures. It invested me more in discovery and in bonding with the creatures. It’s honestly a neat take on monster-catching games, and helped me form an emotional connection that I haven’t felt with these kinds of games in some time.
Plus, some of this stuff the game generates is downright hilarious.
Procemon: You Must Catch Them is available now on itch.io and Steam.
