The Rain World: Downpour DLC gives players a crew of new, cute, useful slugcats to give you a leg up on trying to survive this game’s harsh, brutal lands.
While the slugcats may look cute, they inhabit a world that is extremely hostile to them. I know I’ve mentioned that a lot in only a few words, but this game is HARD. Your adorable little creature doesn’t have much going for it besides intelligence, so you’ll need to be very, very careful. Most of the other animals in this world will quickly rip you apart, and many of them are excellent hunters themselves, often tricking and trapping you. That’s also assuming the torrential rains don’t just take you out. It is a harsh place to live in, but look at those little eyes. SOMEONE needs to save these critters.
While the original slugcat didn’t have too many abilities, this DLC gives you several other slugcats with neat powers. The green one has a long tongue that you can use to swing around, the blue one is a good little swimmer, the red one is good with explosives and is itching to fight – there’s many unique powers that will change how the game’s played. Even better, you can play up to four player local co-op to work together to survive the dangers of this world. Now, you can turn things around on some of those monsters that have been stalking you. The game also has additional places and challenges if you’re one of those people who finds the original game too easy. Although my brain cannot wrap around the idea of wanting to make this harder.
Rain World: Downpour is an excellent addition to a satisfying, if difficult, game. The new slugcats bring a ton of versatility to what you can do in the game, and being able to work with friends takes some of the pressure off. There’s a little something for everyone here, and a good reminder that, while very challenging, it’s also a very rewarding game.
Rain World: Downpour is available now on Steam (although be sure you have the base game to play it!).
