If all of that 3D mucking around sounds exhausting, why not try Residentvania and do all your monster-slaying in sidescrolling action game style?
This game is a mixture of the first stage of the original Castlevania and the Castle Dimitrescu section of Resident Evil: Village. It makes for an impressive combination, although this version of the protagonist is far better with the knife. Replacing the whip with Ethan’s knife, and all of the sub weapons with a pistol, it tasks you with crossing several areas filled with lumbering undead, making your way to the first of Lady Dimitrescu’s daughters. She’s a bit faster and more persistent than Castlevania‘s bat boss, but you can still take her out with your holy gun.
Residentvania showcases some nice pixel art renditions of the characters and monsters, managing to capture their details quite well despite their smaller sizes. Actually, Ethan looks far cooler in this than he does in the game. The level itself is also filled with many neat nods to its inspiration, being filled with breakable windows and many familiar paintings. It’s a lovely experience that captures a lot of the fun of both the games it brings together. Plus, I never really get tired of stabbing things so hard they explode.
The experience is pretty short, as it only covers a single level that will only take a few minutes to play, but it’s definitely an enjoyable experience. Also a pretty fun look at what Resident Evil: Village may have looked like had it been a sidescroller done with pixel art.
Residentvania is available now (for whatever you wish to pay for it) on itch.io.
