Lovecraft’s Untold Stories is a challenging roguelike that pits you against monstrous beings from the Cthulhu mythos, but the damage they do to your mind may be far worse than what they do to your body.
In Lovecraft’s Untold Stories, you need to overcome the power of various Great Old Ones and Outer Gods. It’s a bit more than you can probably handle with a shotgun, but maybe you’ll be able to find better weapons as you explore the game’s randomly generated Victorian mansions, creepy hospitals, and hostile jungles. Expect a lot of trouble from ghoulish creatures from Lovecraft’s stories as you explore, though. They’re not real keen on leaving you breathing.
You can use five different investigators to battle these horrors. The private detective offers a balance between health and stamina (getting tired while something is looking to gnaw your brain is bad). The professor is a bit weak but works well at a distance (with a gun that makes a shield). The witch wrecks monster faces, can teleport, has elemental abilities, but is also quite flimsy. Thieves can hide and deal big time melee damage. Or you can skip right to being a ghoul and lay zombie beatdowns, but you can’t seem to figure out medkits (but you do regenerate).
All of these classes are quite capable, but being strong may not protect your mind as you play. Lovecraft’s Untold Stories features decisions you must make that will affect your character’s sanity. If it starts to get low, it will start to dwindle, and if it bottoms out, you die. If you can keep your mind in check, you also need to explore to find clues about the Elder God bosses of each area, or else you will die of lost sanity on sight. But looking for clues means taking more mental and physical risks, forcing players into a careful mental balancing act if they hope to win.
Mind and body have to be in balance if you want to survive Lovecraft’s Untold Stories. Although, did you really expect to beat these monstrous gods, anyway?
Lovecraft’s Untold Stories is available now on Steam.
