Ruth’s Journey follows the title character as she tries to take pictures of a specific bird to save her job. There’s stranger business happening in these woods, though.
In this game, you play as the title character of the same name. She works for an environmental company, but she often spends all day stamping papers and sitting in a small office. That is, until people start reporting that the Golden Finch has started appearing in the wild. Due to budget cuts, you’ve been assigned to take photo evidence of them.
The beginning of the game showcases a sad work life. You’re clearly unhappy in your job, your co-workers are fired without much warning, and you are being assigned to take pictures, which is something you have never done. Armed with your camera and the need for your paycheck, you step out into the woods to see if you can actually find this finch.
Ruth’s Journey is beautiful in its writing and world. The place is captivating; it’s amazing to be out in nature like this. The voice acting and cut scenes are well designed, pulling you into the story. You are able to take wonderful pictures with your camera, zooming in and enjoying the scenery as well. As you try to find this golden finch, you start to discover some other things in the local forest. You can break into a hut, you can explore a cave, and you start to find traces of something that was lingering in the community.
You see, some campers went missing recently as well, but nobody has any real leads of what happened. By mistake, you stumble upon some clues, and start to piece together what happened to the people who were last visiting this area. On top of that, you actually are able to see the golden finch, which will keep your company from going under and help you keep your job.
I was able to play a demo of Ruth’s Journey at WASD and it ended on a cliffhanger, and I have been eagerly awaiting what happens next since.
Ruth’s Journey is currently in development, but in the meantime, you can add it to your Steam Wishlist.
