Evil lobsters in swimsuits. A raptor with a minigun. Some sort of dog with a biohazard coat. Schwarzerblitz doesn’t always take its roster too seriously.
Schwarzerblitz aims to take players back to the early days of 3D fighters with its low-poly action and its sense of humor with its characters. The game offers some ridiculous combatants with its minigun-toting raptors who are more than happy to bring a gun to a fistfight. That silliness doesn’t mean they’re any less dangerous, though, each having a suite of combos they can put together to lay beatdowns. Some characters are downright amazing as well. Cyphr doesn’t have any arms but will happily kick you to a pulp. Which is AWESOME.
The game’s focus on an older visual style doesn’t mean that its combat hasn’t taken some modern inspirations, boasting some clever stuff with its combo system. Expect to juggle your opponent with its five-button attack system, but don’t expect them to just sit there and take it. The game offers a Trigger system that allows you to cancel a hitstun, helping you get back on your feet when comboed. That same Trigger will also break a guard if you need it to, opening up opportunities when you need them. Both of these can make for major turnabouts and some tense matches.
Schwarzerblitz has a suite of characters, many different stages to fight them in, and an extensive story that will steadily tie together the various character endings you can see in arcade mode. It’s silly, yet offers a deep combo/counter system that should have most fighting game fans smiling.
Schwarzerblitz is available now on GameJolt.
