Sephonie follows a trio of shipwrecked biologists as they delve into a complex network of underground cave systems to get to know the creatures that live there.
Amy Lim, Riyou Hayashi, and Ing-wen Lin were on their way to research the unknown creatures of Sephonie Island when a storm left them stranded. Conveniently, they still end up on the island. Less conveniently, they can’t really leave. Still, may as well make the most of it while they’re here, right? So, the group sets off to explore the cave system. Thankfully, they’re an acrobatic group, and are able to use their parkour skills to hop, wall-jump, and clamber around the sprawling series of caves under the island.
The local wildlife might turn out to be a big help, if you can connect with them. Some of the unknown creatures can offer you little boosts (Gripshooms are awful helpful if you need to stick to something), so you don’t want to forget that part of your goal. Connecting with the creatures can be a lot of fun with the game’s grid-based connection puzzles, too, so it’s not like it’s annoying to get to know these animals and plants. You just need to create like-colored islands out of colored blocks, which makes for a nice break from leaping over bottomless pits.
Sephonie is a delightful platformer with some intriguing wildlife to get to know along your journey. You’ll also get to know quite a bit about our three main characters as well, as their stories will weave into this island in ways you may not expect. Like all of Analgesic Productions’ works, there is a compelling, human narrative at the core of the game that will stick with you long after the game is done. But you’ll want to see that for yourself.
Sephonie will be made available today on Steam.
