In Serre, you are a young woman named Arlette, gardening in her greenhouse, when an alien lands there looking to take over the world. Or your heart.
Serre, which was in itch.io’s Racial Justice & Equality Bundle, is a short visual novel with beautiful artwork and an interesting story. You play as a young and awkward girl who really doesn’t seem to like humans very much at all. While gardening, something you absolutely love, a strange bee-like alien called Oaxa lands in your greenhouse, looking to take over all of Earth.
Instead of being scared or being attacked by this creature, you offer them tea – something that you find comfort in and grow within your own garden. This tea starts a bond between the alien and yourself, allowing a relationship to grow. Throughout the game, you’ll follow this relationship, coming to understand what this breed of alien thinks of humans, their understanding of Earth, and through this, you’ll hopefully overcome some of the problems you both have. And while this happens, you start to fall in love.
Falling in love with an alien that randomly landed on Earth is a bit tricky, as communication can falter even when you’re working with a challenging language barrier. Serre only has a few options for you to drive the story, but it’s still a story worth following, as it’s very kind. Thankfully, the alien isn’t really good at conquering planets, so hopefully there is space in the world for the both of you – as long as you can be kind to yourself and each other.
Serre is available now on itch.io.
