Shadows of Doubt: The Detective Simulator allows you to enter a procedurally-generated open world to solve a murder. So long as you keep on track.
The game is set in a sci-fi noir city. There is a serial killer on the loose, and you are a detective that doesn’t quite follow the rules. Instead of waiting for things like paperwork and permission, you can sneak and hack your way into different crime scenes, take whatever you want, and then leave before anyone finds you.
Because of that, you’ll want to be sure not to leave much of a trace inside the various crime scenes. The game shows you a suspect bar, which can slowly fill up as people see you there and as you leave things like fingerprints or rummage around too much. There is always a lot to see in these scenes, so it feels thrilling. When you collect any sort of evidence, you can then take it into a menu, which acts as one of those large detective boards where you can pin things together and add red ribbons to connect your thoughts. It’s an easy board to use and quite fun when it comes to putting your information all in one place.
While you can spend time trying to solve the mystery and find the killer, you can also just do whatever you want. Punch a cop? Sure. Explore the city like a civilian? Go for it. The world is yours. There are lots of really cool details in this game, like if you dig around in garbage, you will then stink, and people will react differently to you. These small details make this world feel so realistic and liveable, and with so many options of how to play, it’s a very promising experience!
Shadows of Doubt: The Detective Simulator is currently in development, but in the meantime, you can add it to your Steam Wishlist.
