Still Heroes is an interactive fiction piece that explores how it can be hard to keep going when your fellow superheroes decide they don’t want to do it any more.
Have you ever wondered how super heroes pay the bills? I mean, some of them keep day jobs, and that’s clearly for a reason. Punching out aliens that want to take over the world doesn’t really give you much of a paycheck. And, I mean, even if you have super powers, you need to eat and sleep somewhere. In the world of this game, there is some money coming in to superheroes who save the day, but like most freelancers (I mean, superheroes are freelance, deep down, right?), it only works if you’re getting a lot of jobs. And Emeline’s group hasn’t been getting much work lately, making them question whether they really want to do this any more.
Emeline still wants to keep helping people, though, but has found herself largely alone doing the work. She’s also juggling it with her own daily life, her relationships, and with her financial needs. You’ll explore these with her as she fights to keep saving and helping people, all while taking small interactions in the work that bring you into the action and emotions. There’s only a handful of ways you connect with this interactive piece of fiction, but they help you form an impressive, touching bond with Emeline and her story. I can’t much go into specifics without telling you about more of the story, but these moments help create a powerful connection between you and Emeline, feeling it more than if it were only the words on the page.
Still Heroes is a wonderful visual novel that knows how to form a connection with the player, all while delving into the hardships of following dreams when everyone else is giving up on them.
Still Heroes is available now on itch.io and Steam.
