Stone House Orphanage sees you looking for some missing children, trying to get answers from an unsettling, eerie nun. Your search won’t take long, though.
Kids are disappearing from Stone House, an orphanage that has seen better days. The place is looking kinda run down, as is the nun who runs the place. They’re happy to answer your questions, but with a face that looks like its been worn down with a belt sander, I’m not sure how many questions you’re going to want to ask them. That and they make this eerie, scratching noise whenever they talk, something that makes every moment of conversation feel all the more uncomfortable. The music only compounds this sense of impending doom as well.
You’ll only explore a handful of rooms and have a few short chats with the nun before your adventure here will be done, so the game really doesn’t waste any time. There’s this constant sense of unease (also, does that nun seem unusually huge on top of all of the other weird stuff going on here?) that permeates the work, making every second feel frightening. You can sense that things are going to go wrong in a hurry, but given that this was made for the Two-Minute Horror Jam, that shouldn’t be terribly surprising.
It’s still incredibly impressive how quickly Stone House Orphanage sets up a tone and ramps up tension, creating something genuinely scary that hits you as soon as the game starts. That said, I hope the next investigator who comes to this place does a little bit more looking around before meeting an unfortunate end. Who eats the food in a creepy orphanage, anyway?
Stone House Orphanage is playable now on itch.io.
