Summer of Joy is about the sweet moments and the bits of summer that we want to savor, all carried along by delightful musical puzzles.
Sometimes, games aim to be adorable and showcase a story in a cute light. These are the types of games I treasure and enjoy checking out. Summer of Joy is a great example of this. Providing an adorable story about two young people, growing up, finding love, and interacting in some very relatable scenarios – like eating ice cream and playing in tents – this game takes these little moments and turns them into cute puzzles that would be good for younger children or young adults.
Many of these puzzles are done through music, having you tap the left or right side of the screen as a related object glides down it, following the music to bring about the next bit of story. Through this story, these two characters grow and interact.
I got the chance to see Summer of Joy at the Big Indie Pitch digital event, where the developers spoke about the small joys that their game contains. The gameplay is very simplistic, often using small movements like uncovering a screen or musical puzzles that just contain tapping, so it’s a game that anyone can pick up and play. I feel this simplicity allows the story to be the focus of the game, highlighted with music as you learn and discover the love that two people have.
Summer of Joy is coming out this summer on iOS, but in the meantime, you can find more information on Nikhil Jolly or Tanya Jaiswal’s websites or on Hypernova Interactive’s site.
