You’re a tiny life form just trying to find something to eat as you coast through the waters, hopefully avoiding the other dangerous, disturbing denizens of Swallow the Sea.
As an egg cell, you’d kind of like to grow into your full form. Maybe have a nice, satisfying life for yourself with a crummy job where you work too hard so you can buy video games about swimming through a scary ocean. You’d rather not be devoured whole, especially by all of these weird sea creatures that all seem to have at least one too many mouths. Why do they need so many mouths? Maybe it would be all right to be eaten by something with just one mouth, but all of these excessive mouths are just ridiculous.
Anyway, you need to meander an extremely hostile, pretty gross sea as you eat to grow yourself. Which is kind of messed up in its own way, as you’re looking for other, smaller life forms to pick on while hoping you can avoid a similar fate. Maybe you don’t want to think about that too hard while something is trying to gnaw on your squishy body, but maybe it’s something you absolutely SHOULD be thinking about. Hint hint.
Swallow the Sea, when not making you think about some discomforting topics, is an eerie and frightening journey as a vulnerable sea creature (who still has to dole out a similar fate to their own sources of food to exist). I didn’t expect to leap out of my seat over a game where I don’t want to get eaten by fish, but between its atmosphere and themes, it’s quite a chilling experience.
