TEMPLE of RUBBO follows several humanoid animals and their squeaky battles against the denizens of a stunningly cute (but still dangerous) dungeon.
Some folks have gotten changed into animals. Instead of enjoying their newfound adorable natures, they decide to go poke around some dungeon in hopes of finding a way to change back. There’s a ton of weapons and tools down there to help you deal with the critters you run into. More importantly, you can bring a crew of up to four people in a group. Trying to fight creatures when you a lonely duck can get pretty hard, after all. Even a duck with a sword.
I think it was the sound effects, almost as much as being able to play with friends, that kept me delving deeper into this game. The weapons make a squeaky sound, like a cat toy or some sort of rubber chicken sword. That playful sound made things feel lighthearted and silly, even when I was dying yet again to some cute, yet murderous, thing. The visuals strengthen that silliness as well, making the whole adventure feel light and playful, even when it’s getting harder and harder. You can still die pretty easily in this game even if all your enemies look like pleasant little animals. Although I found I got frustrated less because…well, how mad can you really get at these cheerful monsters?
TEMPLE of RUBBO is a charming roguelike dungeon crawler, one that’s a lot harder to get mad at because of its look and sound. You have plenty of classes and weapons you can find for your chosen animal buddy, which also gives you more reasons to want to explore. And also, who wouldn’t want to hang out with a sword-swinging duck?
