Inspired by Chinese culture and folklore, The Long Road Ahead takes players on a chilling ride home.
Ying and Liang are heading back to Liang’s hometown on a dark night, riding the black roads on a motorcycle. It’s the kind of night where the world doesn’t seem to exist outside of the glow of your headlights, fading into a nothingness that wraps around you and begins to squeeze. Your certainties fade under this pressure, and things grow more sinister the deeper you go into the darkness.
It isn’t long before the pair starts to see some things they shouldn’t be seeing, if only for a split second. The Long Road Ahead offers chilling glimpses into the supernatural as you make your way to your destination, following the dialogue between the two as they become more and more aware of what’s going on around them.
The Long Road Ahead creates a jarring effect with its papercraft art style, drumming up a sense of innocent arts and crafts, or of playing with paper dolls, as the things around you grow steadily more frightening. It’s a disarming look that seems that much more unsettling when set amongst the darkness and the creatures that creep within it. But hey, at least you’ll learn something about Chinese culture and monsters as you deal with whatever it is that means you harm on these shadowy roads.
The Long Road Ahead is available for free on Itch.io and GameJolt.
