Travelling to places old and new aren’t always pleasant experiences. In visiting The Old City of High Walls, we find a city divided by classes and torn apart by doubt and industrialization.
John Lee Cooper‘s The Old City of High Walls takes you to a land which — even to the protagonist — is distant and alien. It begins as your train pulls into a rapidly-industrialized city – a city where the slums and fishing districts are dense, and everywhere is haunted with the noises and side-effects from the heart of the city.
The city itself seems to exist outside of both time and space. A fog-soaked lapping shoreline delivers irradiated fish to the people of the city. An overstaffed barracks abruptly divides parts of the city.
The Old City of High Walls is as dense as the city itself, with what feels like hundreds of doors to knock at, and dozens of denizens to chat away to. Your protagonist is simply looking for a place to spend the night, and maybe write out a letter, but there are memories hidden in the destitution, and there are distractions aplenty.
There’s also the alchemist, a strangeness in a strange city. They are the key to some of the endings, of which there are at least five. You might also find a distant family member, or be consumed by the shadows that haunt the waterfront. There’s definitely a lot to do.
